Tis’ the season, we are filled with holiday cheer and preparing to spend time with our families during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Holidays. As the days gets closer, it is not unheard of for pregnant people due close to the holidays to be scheduled for induction. While inductions are sometimes medically necessary, it’s important to ensure they are not undertaken without a clear medical reason. Here are some tips to help expectant mothers navigate the holiday season and minimize the chances of unnecessary childbirth inductions:
Understand your WHY: Why am i being suggested to have an induction?
Knowing the reason why to your induction is a part of informed decision making process. This allows you and your care team to weigh out your pros and cons and make a decision that fits you best. Inductions should be based on medical necessity rather than convenience. Ask your healthcare provider about the specific reasons they recommend induction and inquire if there are alternative approaches or monitoring methods that could be considered first. Don’t forget to write this down, and go home, research and educate yourself as well.
Is my body ready to be induced?
This is a great question to ask yourself and your provider! There is an assessment called a Bishop Score that is used to determine your body’s “readiness” for induction. Typically, the higher the score, the more likely it is for the actual induction to be successful. When you think about it- a cervix that has already started to thin out and open will be much more receptive to induction than to one that is still hard, high up in the body, and closed.
Keep lines of communication open:
Maintain open and honest communication with your healthcare provider about your birth preferences. Share any concerns you have about scheduling an induction during the holidays. Collaboratively discuss your options, considering both the medical necessity and your personal preferences.
Be patient and trust your body:
Pregnancy often comes with its own timeline. Trust your body’s natural process and avoid feeling pressured to induce labor simply for scheduling purposes. Allow yourself the time you need to go into labor spontaneously.
Get a second opinion: If you have reservations about the recommended induction, don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. Consulting with another healthcare provider can provide additional insights and perspectives.
Know Your Rights Familiarize yourself with your rights as a patient. You have the right to make informed decisions about your healthcare, seek second opinions, and/or accept and decline medical recommendations. If you feel pressured into an unnecessary induction, consider seeking guidance from a patient advocate.
Remember, the holiday season is a special time, and your birth experience should align with your values and preferences. By staying informed, communicating effectively with your healthcare provider, and trusting your body, you can stay at the center of your childbirth experience and make the decisions that feel right for you.
